The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay in recognition of her commitment to peace and international law. A good decision.
The Nobel Peace Prize thus sends an important signal in support of strengthening international law. The unipolar world order that has shaped recent decades has not made the world more peaceful. The United Nations has been weakened in favor of informal circles of power such as the G7/G8. A multipolar world order undoubtedly challenges the West’s former dominance; however, peace and transformation require a multilateral order that upholds international law even against the interests of major powers and overcomes the logic of military blocs.
